At the bottom of this article is a series of photos of how over the years  I have tried to engage and develop Chinquchi.....Notice that each photo shows the tension that several Dojo's have completely forgotten about when it comes to gaining strength......

ABOUT KATA

AN ORGANIZED SERIES OF PREARRANGED DEFENSIVE AND OFFENSIVE MOVEMENTS SYMBOLIZING AN IMAGINARY FIGHT BETWEEN SEVERAL OPPONENTS AND PERFORMED IN A GEOMETRICAL PATTERN.

FIVE CATEGORIES OF BASIC MOVEMENTS:

1. Kamaekata (Ready stances)
2. Dachikata (Stances)
3. Semekata (Attacking techniques)
4. Ukekata (Blocking techniques)
5. Gerikata (Kicking techniques)

AVERAGE TIME TO MASTER ONE KATA:
Apx. 3 years or 3000 to 10000 reps.

EMPHASIS WITH REGARD TO SPEED WHEN PERFORMING KATA:

1. Half speed--Concentrate on correct movement
2. Three-fourths speed--Imagine the actual opponent
3.  Full power--Concentrate on proper focus

WHAT OCCURS WHEN ONE PERFORMS A KATA PERFECTLY:
The person becomes the kata and thereby ceases to exist as an individual.  Whereas the kata existed externally, it is brought to life by the performer.

WHAT THE HEAD'S ROLE IS IN PERFORMING KATA:
The head should be used to lead the body around on all turning movements.  Eye contact is first.

WHAT THE FEET'S ROLE IS IN PERFORMING KATA:
Seeking and establishing the next position.

THE TIMING OF TENSION IN A KATA:
Unless performing a tension technique, there should be no tension until the end of the technique at which time there is to be %100 muscular contraction for a split second.

FOUR BASIC PRINCIPLES IN ORDER OF IMPORTANCE:

1. Eyes (Perceptions-sight-"Maai")
2. Balance (Foundation-footwork-posture)

2. CORRECT STARTING AND ENDING POINTS
3. UNDERSTANDING OF EACH TECHNIQUE) SO THAT ALL MOVEMENTS WILL BE DONE CORRECTLY
4. PLACING EACH BLOCK OR STRIKE AT THE CORRECT POINT WITH REFERENCE TO THE IMAGINARY OPPONENT
